About the School

Royal Grammar School is an independent day school which is a member of the HMC and a leading independent school in the North East. RGS became fully co-educational in 2008 and today girls make up 46% of the student population.

To ensure that Sixth Form students are best prepared for the next stage of education, RGS’s curriculum offers an equal access to linguistic, mathematical, scientific, technological, human and social, physical and aesthetic and creative areas of study.

Exam Results and University Destinations

From 2017 to 2019, at GCSE, 84.4% of the grades were 9-7. At A-Level, 87.2% of grades were A*-B.

RGS has an enviable academic record in helping leavers go on to study at competitive universities, including Oxford and Cambridge.

Extra-Curricular Activities

There are a wide range of clubs and teams available, ranging from traditional sports like cricket and hockey, to more modern alternatives such as trampolining and frisbee. 

RGS’s sports teams regularly succeed at national and regional level, for example, the Natwest Rugby Cup, Rosslyn Park 7s, the Lord’s Taverners Cricket Cup, the ISFA Football Cup and National Schools' competitions for hockey and netball.

Facilities

RGS has a large Science and Technology Centre with 15 specialist science laboratories for Biology, Chemistry and Physics, as well as two design and technology laboratories and a teaching kitchen.

In January 2020, the new Sixth Form centre was launched with individual study pods, a space for collaborative working, printing and photocopying facilities and a new coffee bar etc.
