February 14th is also World Book Giving day!

Learning to read is crucial in our development and not only develops language skills but exercises our brains, enhances concentration and encourages a thirst for knowledge. For many of us, books are an integral part of our childhood but not all children are so fortunate, in fact 1 in 8 disadvantaged children in the UK don’t own a single book!

World Book Giving Day is a fun opportunity to get books into the hands of children and encourage reading amongst all.

There are so many advantages to reading; just by hearing stories, children are exposed to a wide range of words which helps them build their own vocabulary and improve their understanding when they listen, which is vital as they start to read too. The process of learning to read is about listening and understanding as well as working out what is printed on the page, so it also develops their imagination and creativity.

Parents who read to their toddlers and pre-schoolers every day are enhancing their child’s vocabulary at an age when their young brains are absorbing everything like a sponge. Reading together also creates a bond between the reader and the child and provides a great form of entertainment for them too. Furthermore, reading will prepare children for learning as it helps them to discover how we read and write and exposes them to topics about everyday life and the world around them.

Children who enjoy reading not only do better in language and literacy subjects, but in all of the different subjects as well.

This year, instead of giving valentines cards why not leave a book for a child to discover or donate to a local charity.

英國公立學校的收生標準
